BringAbout Studio Residencies are unparalleled opportunities for writers and performing artists to explore and activate dance as a vital storytelling tool in the creation of American musical theater, opera, and experimental new works. This program breaks down silos, offering a transformative space to discover the possibilities for dance as a narrative tool while fostering collaboration between writers, composers, choreographers, and performers.

Pivot.
Take Action.
Unlike the typical development process for theatre and opera, where dance is often introduced later, BringAbout Studio Residencies invite artists to jump into the sandbox with dance and physicality earlier in the writing process. The approach is designed to inspire and accelerate the writing process and expand possibilities for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
A key component of this residency is preparation—artists arrive off-book for three sections of a project. This creates a unique and valuable space where everyone is fully present, allowing artists to investigate how movement and dance can activate storytelling. Singing, acting, and dancing happen in tandem rather than in solos, fostering a highly cohesive and integrated creative process.
A process-Oriented Experience for Writers & Composers
Preparing for a BringAbout Studio Residency starts with identifying and discussing questions related to how dance functions within three sections of a project. The three sections may include full songs, transitions, character transformations, location variations, and more—all in pursuit of discovering how dance functions as a through line.
Studio Residencies are realized (on our feet) over a one-day studio session with BringAbout performing artists, music director, musicians, choreographer and writing team.
The 2025/26 cohort of writers, composers, and artists for BringAbout Residencies is being thoughtfully curated by the BringAbout Activation Committee. This dynamic group, represented by Broadway artists and makers—including Scott Wasserman, Saori Yokoo, Erin Clemons, and Liz Carlson—works alongside BringAbout Artistic Director, Jennifer Jancuska, to identify visionary talent and foster groundbreaking collaborations.
For over a decade, BringAbout has nurtured emerging dance artists into award-winning performers and creators. Now operating as a nonprofit, our goal is to ensure that these transformative opportunities are accessible to all artists—regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, race, or sexual orientation. BringAbout Studio Residencies create an inclusive and collaborative environment where diverse artists connect, create, and innovate together.
