BringAbout Studio Residencies operate at the unique and thrilling intersection between dance and theater, activating dance as an essential tool in the creation of American musical theater and dance artists as cohesive collaborators.
The artists participating in BringAbout Studio Residencies engage with dance in ways that are only happening with BringAbout. Dance for theater is often developed in a silo; however, we bring dance back to the forefront of the writing process by fostering collaboration between dance, music, and text. It's the very first time writers experience their work physically and practice the craft of collaboration with dancers and choreographers. Typically, this doesn't happen until a piece is in contract for production, making dance a final layer rather than a deeply cohesive narrative element of storytelling (and leaves dancers as dancers only, rather than collaborators).
For more than a decade, BringAbout has served as a launch pad for dance artists, nurturing them from emerging talents to Broadway award-winning creatives and performers. I transitioned BringAbout into a nonprofit this year to specifically support the artists who annually engage in BringAbout Studio Residencies, ensuring that the opportunities transcend traditional barriers of socioeconomic status, gender, race, and sexual orientation, creating an inclusive space where diverse artists can collaborate, often for the first time.
